Conques

:: 8 SEP 2003 :: Conques, Aveyron, France

Conques The bridge was no wider than the car...

The road from hell, according to Stacy. It was small and windy, but she was the one navigating... After a few hours of driving through the mountains we got to Conques, definitely not the same way as the other visitors: we were faced with a romanesque bridge the same width as the Saab 9000. We made it across, and then realized that had we got stuck on there we wouldn't have been able to open the doors; and getting out through the windows would have had to happen hanging over the river...

Conques itself is perched in the mountains of Aveyron and is still used as a stop for the pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The abbey has a medieval treasure kept in a small museum. Unfortunately the weather was miserable and we didn't stay in Conques very long, anxious to get to the mediteranean and hopefully better weather. Also we were ready to start spending our days differently than just driving around for hours...
